Fire Explorer
Post #48

was Started in 1981 by Brian Brooks of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. The Original post consisted of six members ranging in ages 14 through 16. Our purpose is to introduce young people to the field of fire and rescue emergency services, and provide basic knowledge and skill needed to continue into that field, should they desire to do so. Since we started, over 100 high school students have participated in our explorer program. Many of those have graduated into the ranks of volunteer fire fighters or Emergency Medical Technicians.
Our Exploring Program
The Explorer Post meets every Tuesday night from 6:30 TO 8:00PM At The Whitehall Volunteer Firehouse.

WHAT DOES A FIRE RESCUE EXPLORER POST DO?
Explorers complete training classes which include fire suppression training, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), rope rescue, water rescue, auto extrication, and forcible entry. Upon becoming a LEVEL III Explorer, you are issued a full set of turn-out gear and a radio and may take part in fire scene operations.

Explorer Post #48 Explorers learn nearly all aspects of basic fire fighting. These include such topics as fire supression, salvage and overhaul, SCBA, ground ladders, first aid, public relations, etc. Explorers are issued a complete set of bunker gear for safety. We have training sessions on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Post #48 members also assist with various Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company and activities, such as fund raisers, pubic education, and different service projects. Once an Explorer attains Level III status, they are permitted to assist at department fire calls, when they are specifically requested to assist by the incident commander. There they can perform functions such as SCBA bottle replacements, apparatus restocking, and other various duties as needed. While their assistance is an asset on the scene, their primary purpose for going to these calls is to learn first-hand the fire ground operations. They do not perform actual fire fighting activites, except for brush/woods fire where they can if the situation is safe. After completing six months of membership, the Explorer also receives a uniform shirt and jacket provided by post. Once an Explorer reaches the age of 18, they can apply for membership as volunteer fire fighters with the fire company.
